Rican News Spotlight on Actor, Artistic Director John Ortiz


John Ortiz is a Puerto Rican actor from the Bushwick section of Brooklyn who played the role of Javy Rivera, the drug-addicted partner of Detective Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) in "American Gangster." Ortiz made his silver screen debut as Al Pacino's characters young cousin, 'Guajiro' in "Carlito's Way."

In 1992, Ortiz, along with 13 other Latino actors organized the "Latino Actors Base," a haven through which the actors could work and form an ensemble. Today, their group is known as LAByrinth Theater Company: an award winning troupe of over 100 artists from a wide range of cultural backgrounds and creative disciplines.

Through LAByrinth, Ortiz landed the role of "Clyde" in most recently played the role of Clyde in "Jack Goes Boating" by Bob Glaudini. His role earned a Drama Desk nomination.

In 2006 he went on to appear in "School of the Americas" written by Jose Rivera, as "Che Guevara" which was a co-production between LAByrinth Theater Company and The Public Theater.

A few other co-productions between LAByrinth and the Public Theatre include Jesus Hopped the A Train by Stephen Adly Guirgis in London, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot by Stephen Adly Guirgis, and José Solo in Guinea Pig Solo by Brett C. Leonard.

Other television and film appearances of Ortiz' include Miami Vice as drug lord, Jose Yero, NBCs police drama "Blue Blood," HBOs "Hope Against Hope," Aliens vs. Predator and Fast & Furious.

In 2003, Ortiz took on Broadway in 2003 when appeared in Nilo Cruz’ Pulitzer Prize winning play Anna in the Tropics. That led to an award winning role in Jose Rivera play "References to Salvador Dalí Make Me Hot" which led to an OBIE Award for Ortiz. He also appeared in De Donde at the Public Theater; The Persians directed by Peter Sellars and the national tour of A Few Good Men. His 2009 role in "Othello" at the Vienna Festival was memorable.

Born November 21, 1969, Ortiz is the father of one son and resides in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn with his wife and son.
